IN-SIDE – Integrative Solution for Intercultural Deaf Exchanges

IN-SIDE – Integrative Solution for Intercultural Deaf Exchanges
28 November – 5 December 2011, Ostuni – IT

The research of deafness and promotion of society integration of people with disabilities has always been one of the main European Union priorities. It is essential to change the way some people think about deaf people and replace fear with understanding. This, in turn, may improve attitudes to recognizing and valuing difference.

The project „IN-SIDE”, Integrative Solution for Intercultural Deaf Exchanges, was an integrative youth exchange that took place in Ostuni and Lecce in the period of 28 November – 4 December 2011 and brought together 25 young people from all over Europe: France, Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic and Romania. The delegations of young people included also those who have problems with hearing. The main aim of the project was to bring together people who cannot hear and the ones who can in order to break certain barriers and prejudices. We decided to use non-formal education tools like theater, music/poetry and culture workshops in order to help these people to create a great group dynamic and to work together on intercultural level. During the workshops they also had a chance to learn an international sign language. It made all the participants open their minds and see the world also from different perspectives. Finally, it happened to be the beginning of interesting projects about this thematic as well, as we are still continuing the collaboration with deaf people on local and international level.
Here’s the beautiful result of one of our workshops – the famous love story of Romeo and Juliet told through sign language:
